ABSTRACT. The pollution of surface and ground waters by cattle activities is a problem that has acquired a great interest in recent years. To study the transformations of NSlurry in the unsaturated zone, a series of tests were carried out by means of methacrylate columns of 10 cm of diameter having variable length, soil texture and amount of slurry. The total amount of slurry applied to each column varies between 170 and 250 kg NT/ha. Daily rains were simulated. Periodically, nitrogen (Norg, NO3-, NH4+) of the leaching was analysed. Finally, the soil of the columns was divided in sections of 5 to 15 cm and these were used to determine the nitrogen content retained at the end of the tests. Experiments were performed between February and September 2002.
To analyse the dependence of the nitrogen in the leaching as well as the retained in the soil at the end of the experiments to controllable factors in the laboratory like texture and amount of applied slurry, an experimental design called L9 was carried out. This design consists of nine soil columns which form a factorial model of three factors (column length, soil texture and amount of slurry) with three levels each one (high, medium and low). The application of this statistical design allows applying the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) avoiding the realisation of 27 essays to obtain the same information. The ANOVA was done taking into account the simple, double and triple effects of each one of the factors on the average of Nitrogen leached and retained by means of the Test F. The results shows that some combinations of the above mentioned factors have significant effects in the average of the nitrogen leached as well as in the retained in the soil at the end of the experimentations.
